No Health Without Mental Health

計劃宗旨

The Variety Butterfly Programme supports underprivileged children with mental health challenges with: (i) Timely mental health assessment, medical treatment and/or non-medical therapy, and (ii) Support caregivers to foster their children’s development while receiving treatment

Underprivileged Children / Youth with Mental Health Challenges

  • About 25% of minors had experienced at least one mental health issue in  the past year and among these, roughly half are neurodivergent
  • ”Neurodivergent” individuals tend to process information, learn and behave differently from what is  considered “typical”
  • The more common diagnosis include attention deficit & hyperactive disorder (ADHD) and autism (ASD)
  • Conditions of neurodivergent children are often magnified by academic difficulties, social exclusion and parental stress
  • These children are susceptible to mental health challenges like anxiety, depression, and stress

Early intervention and nurturing environment are essential for children’s long-term health, development and growth

  • Average 19 months queue for public psychiatric service (longest up to 3 years)
  • The underprivileged families have NO ALTERNATIVES while queuing for public health support as they are financially infeasible to have private medical treatment
  • Caregivers have no/little knowledge or resources to seek help

As a result, DELAYED TREATMENT can lead to…

  • Severity of child’s condition heightened
  • Child’s academic and psychological development suffered
  • Caregivers’ emotional stress adversely affects child’s condition
  • Caregiver/child relationship worsens

My seven year-old son was diagnosed to have ADHD but we would have to wait more than two years to see a public psychiatrist.

Our family couldn't afford private treatment so I felt quite helpless. We did not know where to find help or what we should do.

The Variety Butterfly programme has been a great help to our family.

We have made a difference over 9 years:

We recruited a network of private practice psychiatrists to provide early assessment, consultation and treatment to underprivileged children and young adults up to the age of 21 with mental health challenges, during the period while they are waiting for public health services.
